“When Cathryn Jakobson Ramin hit her forties, she found that she couldn’t remember movie titles or hold a thought long enough to jot it down. Her quest to find out what was happening — and, more important, how the brain works — is chronicled in her provocative book Carved in Sand.

2011 ~ “Be Prepared!”

11 Jan

Be Prepared

Thinking back on my training when I was a Boy Scout I recall the Scout Motto.

In the third part of “Scouting for Boys”, Robert Baden-Powell explains the meaning of the phrase:

The Scout Motto is: BE PREPARED which means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your DUTY.

* Be Prepared in Mind by having disciplined yourself to be obedient to every order, and also by having thought out beforehand any accident or situation that might occur, so that you know the right thing to do at the right moment, and are willing to do it.

* Be Prepared in Body by making yourself strong and active and able to do the right thing at the right moment, and do it. [1]

“To do the right thing at the right moment” can be extreme:

“Where a man has gone so far as to attempt suicide, a Scout should know what to do with him.” [2]

“BE PREPARED to die for your country if need be, so that when the moment arrives you may charge home with confidence, not caring whether you are going to be killed or not” [3]

Over the last week or so during devotions I have been taken to…

God’s Promise to direct us on our “paths” as we acknowledge/recognize/appreciate Him:
“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” ~ Proverbs 3:6 (KJV)

God’s Promise through His Word to shine the light on our “path” so that we might see the way at the moment that we need to be able to walk the path He has for us.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” ~ Psalm 119:105 (NIV

Allowing God to transform our minds which will give us wisdom to test things and find God’s perfect will for our lives:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” ~ Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Earlier today I saw a post that was using the word “positioning.”  That is a very good word that sums up what it seems God is doing in my life, in the lives of other Christians and what He is doing in this world.  God not only tells us to “BE PREPARED,” but shines the light on and directs our paths, if we let Him. He is doing this in order to get us, our other Christian brothers and sisters and the world prepared in order to make us fit for service and able to share in Kingdom Work and the harvest at hand. Feel like you are being aligned into a state of readinesss? Looking back on the last few years and going into this new year I can really see that this is so. God “invests” us in his “spiritual boot camp” to make us fit for use. God turns up the heat and pressure and we come out as…gold.

Blessings and I leave you with this final scripture:
“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
~ Romans 15:5-6 (NIV)

Two Traveling Angels ~ “Things aren’t always what they seem.”

Angel 2 Watch Over You!

Angel 2 Watch Over You!

Two Traveling Angels… (copied)

Keep reading to the bottom of this blog post.

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family.

The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion’s guest room.

Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement.
As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it.

When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied,

“Things aren’t always what they seem.”

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife.

After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest.

When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears.

Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.

The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen?

The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused.

The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die.

“Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied.

“When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall..

Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it..”

“Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead.”

“Things aren’t always what they seem.”

Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don’t turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You just might not know it until some time later…

Some people come into our lives and quickly go.

Some people become friends and stay awhile…leaving beautiful footprints on our hearts…..and we are never quite the same because we have made a good friend!!

Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow a mystery.
Today is a gift.
That’s why it’s called the present!

I think this is special…live and savor every moment… This is not a dress rehearsal!

TAKE THIS LITTLE ANGEL
AND KEEP HER CLOSE TO YOU
SHE IS YOUR GUARDIAN ANGEL
SENT TO WATCH OVER YOU

Never take away anyone’s hope. That may be all they have.

Have a Blessed Day!

Candy Cane Puzzle
…ron helms

Well my wife comes home from a Christmas party at her work and she hands me this little gift she gets from the festivities.  Mmmmm. As I look it over and the contents therein I realize that this gift is very strange and the person that was giving them out must have had some enlightenment about the year 2010.

In the 1956 musical The King and I, the King played by Yul Brynner is quite pleased with Anna’s teaching. His eldest son Prince Chulalongkorn has some concerns, however. The young prince asks his father when he will know he knows everything and thus be ready to rule. The King gives him hope, but when he is alone, reveals that he himself is troubled; he does not know how best to rule (“A Puzzlement”).

And this Candy Cane Puzzle is certainly a puzzlement and it comes at the end of quite a formidable year. The gift has solely in its contents a candy cane broken into small sweet pieces. The more I looked at it each day the more my puzzlement.  No one could fix the candy cane back proper. It looks like it is pretty much a waste. Some days later my wife and younger daughter sing in a local production of Handel’s Messiah. Here I find some meaning to the Candy Cane Puzzle. God makes the crooked straight and the rough places plain:

“Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.” ~ Isaiah 40:4 (NIV) Yes, 2010 had seen God at work in my life, my community, my state, my country and the world. His mighty bulldozer was at work in mighty ways for all to see. No one can deny it.

In 2011 we prayerfully ask God to take all these many broken, but sweet pieces of 2010 and make them into something beautiful. God always has plans for our future and does not mind getting all the ingredients ready to create something special out of the messes of our lives. He specializes in this. And God has all the time (he created time, you know) to prepare things so that they will be just right. When it was time Joseph was ready. When it was time Moses was ready. When it was time John the Baptist was ready. When it was time and the WORLD was ready for Jesus to step on the scene he was born in that manger. When it was time Peter and the disciples received the Holy Spirit and did amazing things IN CHRIST.  I could go on and on into the modern times with others, but you get the idea. So I know that when it is time, God will take our little Candy Cane Puzzles and do some amazing things IN OUR LIVES TOO! And, if you only knew, and you will in Heaven some day… God will show you the amazing things He has already done with MY and YOUR Candy Cane Puzzle. But there is more to come in 2011 and each and every year He gives us in this old world.

Happy New Year

Gideon’s Army ~ “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers”

15 Dec

“God hand-picked Gideon’s army: 300 men whose most distinguishing characteristic was not in proving themselves as mighty men of valor, but that they drank water from a position different from the others.”

Find a great overview of Gideon here:

“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers”

Source: One of the well-known lines from the St. Crispin’s Day Speech of Shakespeare’s Henry V.

Origin: From Shakespeare’s Henry V, 1598:

KING HENRY V:

This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember’d;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.
